Extensible Markup LanguageThis is a historical document now. Originally it was intended to serve as a regional selling point for Onalaska and the La Crosse area.
XML is a new language for the internet and for our intranets. Currently the web and your browser use HTML. HTML tags describe how something should look on your screen. They don't contain any information about what you are looking at, they only describe how the data should look.
Because different organizations (or even different parts of the same organization) rarely standardize on a single set of tools, it takes a significant amount of work for two groups to communicate. XML makes it easy to send structured data across the web so that nothing gets lost in the translation.
In the next several months you will begin to hear more and more about XML and its use within the La Crosse area. I hope to keep you informed on what is going on and why this is important to the people of the coulee region and to the State of Wisconsin.
